I have an idea but no business plan, should I go for it?

Ok, like several others I also have an idea which I want to build for myself as it will help me to achieve my goals. Now I believe that many others are also suffering from similar issue and I should give it a shot anyway. During the excitement, I could not realize how to make money. Now it becomes a big turn off for me because the kind of app I am wanting to make is free and has social factors integrated (e.g: Facebook doesn’t charge us yet, earning from various channels which I don’t know).

Now my question is, should I go for it without worrying about money? Can you start earning money just by having huge user base?

It is okay not to have a business plan but you should have a value proposition. You may find the following sentence from a blog post on bootstrapping useful when deciding on your value proposition.

For (target customer)

who (statement of the need or opportunity),

the (product/service name)

is a (product/service category)

that (statement of benefit)

If you formulate a good value proposition for your idea, you will have better assurance that ultimately it will something that people would want. As a startup you need to create value first and then figure out a way to capture some part of that value.

Having a huge user base is not enough, the users must be actively engaged with your product. Facebook is used by over a billion people would are extremely active on it. Spending hours on the product every day. This allows Facebook to attract advertisers that target their users and that is how they make a large part of their revenue. Another aspect is user growth or acquisition, since for building a large enough user base you will need to show that people are signing up for your product at a high enough rate.

You don't need an awesome business plan at the start, you will eventually get lots of ideas and form your business plan in time. Even if you make a business plan right now, it will probably change a lot by the time you get your first customers.

If your project consists of a huge userbase, dont forget that it can always be monetized.

If you get lots of users you don't have to generate revenue from them because users are actually worth money.

This question really depends on funding and what type of model your business is going for (sounds like a freemium model).

When creating a platform service that depends on userbase, it is always a dilemma to choose whether one should start placing ads, charge users for additional features, etc. What many worry is if the focus on monetization will detract growth and less focus will be put into the product. Therefore, I would say rather than having the business plan be the focus (not saying it is not unimportant), it is having a budget plan that really matters. The business plan will always change, but drawing out a budget plan and asking yourself where you should be after how much is spent is crucial. The worst case is to develop and then come to the stage where you are short on funding and can’t operate anymore.

It’s completely fine to not have a business plan when you start off. Check in yur area if Founder Institute is holding events and attend them. They have free one which are very informative and they have a paid program which you need to apply and be accepted to get mentorship from them.

You basically need an idea and a value proposition. The revenue model can be found a little bit later along the way but the important part is to have a value proposition. Wihtout this, you can’t really pitch your idea to anyone.

Once you’re done with the value proposition. Create a minimum viable product (MVP). Iterate fast and often. You don’t need to have programming chops to do this. There’s plenty of open source ressources out there to help you out. The MVP will help you validate your idea. With an MVP you can actually pitch to investors and get them interested. At this point a revenue model is pretty important. Forget about ads. No one will invest in a non-recurring benefit. Work the kinks out of your product. Find a way to sell it. Get a technical co-founder and launch!

All this without* a business plan.

*The investor will probably ask one so be ready.
