Is member contact details web scrapping illegal

Is there are legal barriers that stop scraping member contact details from local directories and publish them in a different competitor product.

This scrapping will be done by using the original web site interface without interfering the original web site.

Disclosure: I used to head Marketing & Sales at a Scraping company.

The best answer I have found online is “It depends”.

That’s because it really depends. Consider:

Are there legal barriers that stop scraping member contact details from YellowPages.

Few legal barriers. Scraping in itself is not illegal. The issues break down to how you do it (e.g. honor robots.txt, don’t hammer the site, etc.) and what you end up doing with the data.

Plenty of legal barriers. Expect a copyright infringement-related lawsuit in no time.

Things would be different if you were mix and matching the data (thereby heavily transforming it) or massaging it to produce aggregates or a statistical analysis.
