How long should I keep running my mobile app startup if its income is low?

I hope my question is not too broad.

How long should I keep running my mobile app startup if it is generating low income?
I’ve got my startup and I was wondering if I should stop it, because there’s not enough income and app sales for the moment.

Edit : the startup has 3 apps in the store.

This depends on a lot of factors:

It’s not clear from your question if the app is your startup, or if you have an existing app and also a startup. If the former, sometimes you need to be patient, but sometimes you need to cut your losses. If it’s the latter, then, if you believe in your startup, you need to cut out distractions, including an app that may be holding you back.

There’s no singular right answer, but there are a number of factors which you should take into account:

(1) the risk tolerance of key parties involved in the venture;
(2) opportunity cost of sticking to the current venture;
(3) the duration until you expect to breakeven if cashflow picks up;
(4) duration until you expect to hit the point where exiting the venture to another source of income without issues is reached.

You have an asset, and the question is, what to do with it?

If you have active users, then you should hit two questions:

What are they getting out of the app?

and

How could you do more for them?

The first will give you some insight into growing the user base, the second into how you can grow the lifetime value of happy customers.

If you don’t, then you essentially have two separate assets - all past users (assuming you have a means of reaching out to them), plus an app that generates a modest profit with you investing minimal effort.

In that case, your historic user base could be a way of accelerating your next project, while your first app has given you learning to help grow your portfolio.
