Are there certain types of bullets that create problems when fed through a lever-action rifle? Do hollow-points or soft-points work or should I stick with regular round-nosed ammo?
(If it matters I’m concerned with a .30-30 Marlin in my particular case)
A major consideration with a lever action rifle is the tube magazine. If you are using spitzer bullets in a tube magazine, they wind up being arranged tip-to-primer, and all it takes is one touchy primer to explode your whole magazine. Hornady makes a line of LEVERevolution ammunition that has a soft, polymer tip. It has the ballistic coefficient of spitzer bullets, but is primer safe.
Round-Nose Flat Point bullets will probably feed pretty well as well and be primer safe, as will hollow points. I’ve heard bad things about feeding wadcutters and semi-wadcutters because of the sharp edges.
