Is there scientific consensus on the case of Easter Island?

Do researchers judge it as a case of malthusian crisis or a mismanagment of resources. Unfortunately I’m no expert in macroeconomics and the flood on papers and different views concerning Easter Island is overwhelming. What is the current state of knowledge?
